As artist Lacy Knudson demonstrates here, Play-Doh isn't just for kids! One day, while the mother of three was mushing the clay into little balls, she realized that her tiny, colorful dots could actually be the foundation for some amazing artwork! And best of all, she could be creative while still spending time with her children.
She dubbed the process “Dozayix,” which is a combination of “playDOh + moSAICS + FUN,” and she began to build her first piece, entitled A New World, with the playful, yet meticulous, technique. For the work, Knudson purposefully blended 23 pounds of the sculpting clay together to create roughly 10,000 half-inch dots no larger than a penny. She perfectly arranged each dot to build the impressionist-style mosaic.
Ranging in size from 3×4 feet to 4×8 feet, each piece takes months to complete as Knudson meticulously places the tiny dots onto the canvas. You can see a time-lapse video of her process below. The artist says, “To me nature is inspiring and exhilarating, family and faith is where my heart is, and art is my passion and joyful expression of all of it.”
