Rylai is a 5-month-old red fox who has captured the hearts of thousands as one of the cutest pets on Instagram. Since her birth in April, she's spent her days eating, playing, and maintaining an adorably snuggly sleep schedule. Seeing as she's white in color, many assume that Rylai's an arctic fox, but since she was born in captivity, she ended up with a color variation that is appropriately called white marble. In addition to her unique coat, Rylai also has unexpected behavior for a red fox. Despite her feral roots, she acts just like any other domesticated pet. She's even learning to use a litter box!
Though Rylai's social media presence may suggest a universal tameness amongst her species, her human assures that a fox is not an ideal pet for just anyone. “Foxes are wonderful and amazing pets but they are a LOT of work!” the fox's owner writes. “I always say that if you work full time or have an active social life, you shouldn't consider a pet fox. If you live in an apartment, you shouldn't consider a pet fox. They are quick to become destructive when bored, they can be loud and stubborn, they are difficult to house train, and have other less than desirable behaviors. If you are still interested and up for a challenge, be sure to do your research!”
Most importantly, this beautiful animal is working to raise awareness for foxes who are slaughtered for their pelt. After you scroll through her Instagram or Facebook feed, buying such a gorgeous creature's fur will be the last thing on your mind.
