The Scholten family is raising the bar for plant lovers everywhere. In collaboration with students from Rotterdam University, the family of four (plus one dog) just moved into a giant greenhouse that doubles as a home. After applying for a spot in this experimental structure, the Scholten's were soon accepted by the program and, in 2015, they moved into their new home. This is especially serendipitous for Helly Scholten, who provides events and photoshoots with plant decorations as a botanical stylist.
The building, which is located in Rotterdam, is mostly made of wood and glass. It sports an edible roof and rain tanks, which allow the family to grow vegetables from the comfort of their own home. The Scholtens can then use these crops in the greenhouse's kitchen and can also utilize the large space to grow a diverse amount of plants. Plus, the house has furniture just like any other home–except these pieces are probably outnumbered by plants.
Up until 2018, the family will be living in the giant greenhouse. By the end of their stay, it will be interesting to see what this project leads to, especially when it comes to the future of sustainable architecture and design.
