Cloud Citizen is a singular mega-building design proposal which envisions a Shenzhen Bay skyline of the future. The concept was created by Urban Future Organization (UFO) and CR-design in collaboration with Chalmers Technical University for the Shenzhen Super City Competition, and it offers up a new way to approach urban planning.
The competition called for a roughly 420-acre financial district with at least three high-rise structures, cultural buildings, and a large green space. The Cloud Citizen concept not only proposes a dense community that is high-tech and that gives back to the environment through rainwater harvesting, solar and wind power, and pollutant filters, but it also creates a visually interesting addition to the Shenzhen skyline. Small areas within the larger, single structure create IT-industry, commercial, leisure, and cultural spaces, and each one is connected to a large park to promote more sustainable lifestyles.
According to the project proposal, “Cloud Citizen confronts the traditional way of building large cities and stretches the borders of personalization, communication and densification of architecture deemed necessary to approach the ideal of regenerative design. The design offers a spatially and programmatically diverse alternative to prevalent high rise monocultures.”
