Artist Veronika Richterov gives new life to plastic PET bottles by transforming them into whimsical sculptures. The Czech-based creative cuts, heats, and assembles containers of different shapes, sizes, and colors to resemble a variety of plants. Her bright, translucent forms are charming representations of blooming cacti, orchids, roses, and much more.
Richterov's work is not only informed by these discarded plastic objects, but they've become an obsession for her. Years ago, she noticed that PET bottle design changes rapidly, and as some popular types suddenly disappear, others emerge. The artist then realized that she should catalog all of their different colors and styles. So, together with her husband, Michal Cihlr, they began to amass a collection in 2007. It's resulted in more than 3,000 PET plastic objects from 76 countries with a lot of diverse designs.
