Amazing Rock Sculptures Perform Impossible Balancing Acts

The art of sculptor Woods Davy is both inspired by nature and composed of natural elements. The artist, who lives and works in Venice, California, creates what he calls a sense of “Western Zen” with his gravity-defying rock sculptures. His Cantamar and Granite series feature a number of collected stones arranged in an impossible balancing act, leaving one to reflect on its unnatural configuration and one's own spirituality.

Davy's Cantamar series, named after the small town in Mexico from which the rocks were gathered, presents sculptures with a serene formation of the pale yet colorful stones. With the aid of hidden steel, each piece is assembled in such a way that they reflect the rolling waves of the tides that shaped and transported the rocks across the Mexican beach. There is something both natural and inorganic about them. Similarly, Davy's Granite series incorporates heavy boulders in gravity-defying compositions. The difference with these works is that they are far bulkier and imposing with a lower center of gravity.
