Throughout his career, actor Michael J. Fox has earned several accolades, including five Emmy Awards that confirm his status as a legendary TV star. Now, he will be getting one of the biggest TV honors for his work off-screen. Fox will receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at this year’s Emmy Awards. This prize honors his massive contributions to the fight against Parkinson’s disease.
Since disclosing his diagnosis with young-onset Parkinson’s disease in 1998, Fox has been more than a mere advocate. The actor has shone a light on this condition, raising awareness around the world with his star power. In the year 2000, he founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. In a little over a 25 years, this institution has grown into the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s research. Supporting more than $3 billion in research programs, the foundation has powered medical innovations and improved the quality of life of millions of patients with their initiatives.
“Michael J. Fox is one of television’s most beloved and enduring performers whose work has left an indelible mark on generations of audiences,” says Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy. “The Television Academy is proud to honor him for his extraordinary leadership in advancing Parkinson’s research, transforming public awareness and inspiring global support through The Michael J. Fox Foundation, whose investments have accelerated scientific breakthroughs and the search for a cure. He continues to exemplify compassion, courage, and service, reflecting the power of one individual to drive meaningful change.”
The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award is given out by the Television Academy to a member of the industry whose philanthropic efforts have a long-lasting positive impact on society. Bob Hope was commended for his extensive tours providing entertainment and boosting the morale of U.S. troops for half a century, starting from World War II through the Persian Gulf War, as well as funding medical research in vision and ophthalmology.
With a little luck, this inspiring accolade may not be the only prize Fox is taking home. This year, he also received his 19th Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series” in the Apple TV series Shrinking. The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award will be presented to Fox at the 78th Emmy Awards ceremony, taking place on September 14. You can follow it live on NBC.
