Designers Re-Imagine Oil Rigs as Positive Environmental Habitats

A Chinese design team recently rolled out a fascinating set of plans that creatively re-imagine oil rigs as floating, eco-friendly habitats that could help the environment recover after an oil spill. The designers – Ma Yidong, Zhu Zhonghui, Qin Zhengyu and Jiang Zhe – created the plan in response to the increasing need to balance responsible resource-harvesting practices with preservation.

Spectacular Long-Exposure Photographs of Fireworks Exploding on a Drone

Photographer Calder Wilson, who specializes in capturing pyrotechnics on film, recently strapped leftover New Year's fireworks to a drone in an experimental photo shoot, and the results are stunning. The Winter Haven, Florida-based photographer set up his photo shoot on the edge of a lake, where he asked a friend to steer the small, remote-controlled drone.

Students Build Tortoise a New 3D Printed Shell to Protect Her from Harm

Cleopatra the leopard tortoise was a victim of poor nutrition. When she was rescued by Colorado group Canyon Critters, handlers saw that her shell had developed dramatic peaks, which weaken her structure and leave her susceptible to injury from other tortoises. That's when a team of design students at Colorado Technical University stepped in to help, employing the use of 3D printing technology to create a brightly colored, protective shell topper for Cleopatra.

Seth Globepainter’s Murals of Children Immersed in Colorful Galaxies

Julien Seth Malland's murals revive crumbling walls with vibrant images of children immersed in galaxies of color. The Paris-based artist, who also goes by the pseudonym Seth Globepainter, adds depth to flat, brick-and-plaster walls with a palette of vibrant hues that seem inspired by a crayon box. These rainbow splashes are contrasted by plain drawings of children that look like they could have been sketched with a pencil.
