Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Kinetic Sculpture Replicates a Bird Flapping Its Wings Using Popsicle Sticks

Design student Joyce Lin replicated a bird flapping its wings using simple machines and materials. The kinetic sculpture is entitled Study in Bird Motion and is made with popsicle sticks and mylar that resembles feathers. It's activated by a hand crank, which sets the entire thing in motion and mesmerizes you as its movements resemble a bird gracefully taking flight.

Beautifully Intricate Food Illustrations by Anna Keville Joyce

When food stylist Anna Keville Joyce's pet bird died, she mourned for its loss in a tangible way. She utilized her professional creative skills to aid in the healing process, and the results are beautiful. A Tribute to Budgie is a series of elegant birds comprised of food and arranged on plates. Joyce came up with the images and crafted the illustrations while photographer Agustn Nieto documented the series.

Colossal Skateboard Ramp Floats Gracefully on Lake Tahoe

As a professional skateboarder, it's safe to say that Bob Burnquist has shredded his share of railings, streets, and ramps. So, when Visit California challenged him to dream big in 2013, Burnquist took them up on the offer. His idea was a twist on the conventional skating ramp. Instead of existing on land, it would float on water.
