More and more countries around the world are waking up to the harmful effects of plastic pollution on our environment. In the U.S., California recently became the first state to officially ban plastic bags, and the European Union voted to say goodbye to single use plastic by 2021. Asia is also doing its part to save the planet, having recently introduced a natural alternative to plastic packaging—banana leaves.
While leaf-wrapped food isn’t anything new in Asia, it is unusual to see this traditional, biodegradable approach used in supermarkets. The first chain to adopt the idea is Rimping Supermarket in Chiang Mai, Thailand. When Perfect Homes Chiangmai visited the store, the delighted team quickly snapped some images of the eco-friendly packaging and shared them on social media. Soon, their post went viral, with more than 3.5 million views and 16,000 shares. A number of people even tagged their own local supermarkets, urging them to take a leaf out of Rimping’s book.
“When it comes to cracking Chiang Mai’s plastic troubles, for sure there’s still a long way to go,” Perfect Homes Chiangmai says on its blog. “But kudos to Rimping Supermarket for a positive step in the right direction. And if it means just one less plastic bag littering the landscapes, fouling the waterways, and choking the storm drains in this fair Northern Rose of ours, then we reckon it was well worth us posting!”

The natural alternative is a positive step towards saving the planet.
