Kumi Yamashita’s New Shadow Sculpture of a Woman Sitting in a Chair

Japanese artist Kumi Yamashita has just constructed a new cherry wood sculpture that shows the shadow of a woman sitting in a chair. Taking a few months to complete, one month spent working on sketches to achieve the right composition and scale, and the the other month spent carving, sanding and adding finishing touches like painting and building the light fixture, the piece is an astounding achievement.

Italian Job-Inspired Bus Sculpture Hangs Off the Edge of Peninsula Hotel Hong Kong

Does this make anyone else feel a little queasy? As part of this year's Art Basel in Hong Kong, artist Richard Wilson has perched a full-sized bus sculpture on the edge of Hong Kong's Peninsula Hotel. The work is inspired by the 1969 British heist movie The Italian Job when Michael Caine and his gang of gold robbers hang precariously off a mountain top. (See the “cliffhanger” clip, here.)

Spectacularly Detailed Dioramas Hidden Inside Vintage Ring Boxes

In Toronto-based artist Talwst's dioramas, antique ring boxes become tiny theaters where spectacularly detailed scenes unfold on a miniature scale. The artist began his unique hobby when a vendor at a Paris market handed him an old ring box and said, “I want to see you do something with this.” Talwst turned it into a seaside scene featuring a woman in a black, vintage swimsuit, and his spectacular series was born.

Interactive Art Gallery Allows Visitors to Become Part of an Illusion

This unique gallery lets visitors do more than just admire great works of art – they get to play with it, too. At Art in Island, an interactive gallery that occupies a former bus station in the Philippines, visitors can step inside paintings and take pictures with the optical illusions. Each piece offers guests a different experience. At some stations, people can climb over the picture frame as if they're in the portrait.
