19th Century Postcards Predicted the World in the Year 2000

Like many of us today, people living in the 20th century were curious about what the future would hold. French artist Jean-Marc Ct and his colleagues attempted to predict the world in the year 2000, and they did so through playful illustrations. Known as France in the Year 2000, these futuristic pictures were released in four installments–in 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1910–and took the form of cigarette/cigar box inserts and, later, postcards.

Charming Illustrations Reimagine Disney Animal Characters as Humans

What would animal characters from animated Disney films look like if they were human? Art student Alaina Bastian has imagined some of these scenarios in her charming series of illustrations called Humanized. Taking into consideration the visual style of each animated film, she replaces the creatures with their similarly-drawn Homo sapiens counterpart. Bastian went to great lengths to ensure that her updated personalities retain the attitudes of their predecessors.

Unraveling Ceramic Sculptures Are an Eloquent Reminder of Quickly Passing Time

Seoul-based artist Haejin Lee creates ceramic works that look as though they'll unravel at any moment. Concentrating primarily on the human body, the sculptor fashions heads and feet that look mostly whole, but have ribbon-like strands rippling from the top of each piece. They appear in various stages of disarray, with facial features that have been twisted and multiplied, which adds another facet of eeriness to the already-surreal works.

Wire Animal Sculptures Look Like Life-Size Scribbled Drawings Suspended in Mid-Air

Artist David Oliveira has an insightful understanding of both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds. With this expert grasp of the two planes, he's able to skillfully manipulate wire to create a zoo of mind-boggling animal sculptures. Though they are technically three-dimensional, the artist's work has a visually deceptive quality that makes it appear to be a drawing, at first glance.
