The Portuguese artist, along with a small team of assistants, uses textile scraps that would otherwise be discarded to create her elaborate wall hangings. Reminiscent of coral reefs, they represent the complexities of life underwater. While her studio was founded a decade ago, Barragão continues to stretch her creativity.

Merging painting and sculpture, Anastasia Komar‘s mixed-media artwork is hypnotic. Komar's unique vision stems from her background in architecture and environmental design, and she considers her work an intersection of art and contemporary bioengineering. Her abstract acrylic paintings are enhanced by sinuous polymer sculptures that wrap around the canvas. These sculptures are inspired by the colors and textures Komar sees when exploring life through electron microscopy.

Italian artist Amedeo Capelli specializes in this style, carving dynamic pieces of art out of wood that feature a colorful cast of characters. Capelli's work is whimsical, wholesome, and wildly detailed, as the artist uses a complex set of wooden gears and turntables to get his creations moving. The focus of many of Capelli's creations, or, as he calls them, automatas, are animals.
