The Ballerina Project is an ongoing exploration of the elegant beauty of ballet dancers as seen through the lens of photographer Dane Shitagi. Rather than being confined to a studio, Shitagi prefers to photograph his subjects outside on the streets, inspired by the rawness and atmosphere of the living city.
Beautiful ballerinas strike graceful poses in the middle of bustling city streets, their elegant forms standing in stark contrast to the hard-edged shapes of the urban landscape. In each image, Shitagi manages to capture not just the ballerina's skillful dance moves, but her emotions, soul, and passion for the extraordinary art of ballet.
In the 14 years since its beginning in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Ballerina Project has grown tremendously while still keeping to its core of striking and refined compositions. Now also shot on the streets of New York City, Boston, and Toronto, the project incorporates digital photography in addition to its traditional film aesthetic. After amassing a huge following on Facebook, the series is now on other social media sites as well, including one of the most stunning Instagram feeds we've seen.
