New York Subway Murals Celebrate Influential Icons from Bronx History

In celebration of some of the most influential figures from Bronx history, Brooklyn-based artist Rico Gaston has recently unveiled his series of glass mosaic murals at the 167th Street B/D subway station. Titled Beacons, the eight icons featured include Gil Scott-Heron, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Reggie Jackson, and Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy‘s love of outer space was sparked over 20 years ago while exploring the solar system through his father's telescope. A few years ago, after finding a free telescope on Craigslist, his interest was renewed and he set down the difficult path of learning the technical aspects of astrophotography. Over time, his tenacity paid off, as exemplified by an incredible photograph of the solar system shot almost entirely in his backyard.
