Incredible Show Features 17 Shaolin Monks Amid 21 Wooden Boxes

In what promises to be one of the most exciting dance performances to hit Scotland, contemporary choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and 17 Buddhist monks ages 10-26, from the Shaolin Temple in China, present Sutra. After a successful run in 2008, the show is back for two days, May 17 and May 18 at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre. Sutra blends martial arts with dance on an original set designed by famed artist Antony Gormley.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, a self-professed Bruce Lee fan, spent several months at the Shaolin Temple before coming up with this unique performance. Gormley's stage consists of 21 wooden boxes that are manipulated in a myriad of ways – they become everything from walls and boats to beds and skyscrapers.

To get a real sense of the show, watch the video, below. (Love the end.) As the Times states, “Exceeds even our highest expectations.”
