Massive Gollum Sculpture Welcomes Travelers at New Zealand Airport

In promotional preparation for the release of Peter Jackson's next film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, a giant Gollum sculpture has been installed at New Zealand's Wellington Airport. The 43-foot long and 9.8-foot tall suspended installation features the creepily emaciated character reaching for his oh so “juicy sweet fishes” over the cafeteria of the airport.

The massive figure was constructed and installed by Weta Workshop, a Miramar-based special effects and prop company, which has worked closely with the film franchise on costumes, sets, and props in the past. The impressively imposing piece was completed in three days and currently hovers over travelers getting their own bite to eat as it welcomes them to New Zealand, the proud home of LOTR. Check out the video, below, to get a glimpse of the intensive labor that went into the assembly and suspension of the 2,645-pound sculpture.
