In 2014, Dan Abramson created Yoga Joes, an army of small green men dedicated to keeping the inner peace. Equipped with yoga poses instead of guns, the toy figures contorted their bodies into positions like Downward Facing Dog and the Warrior Two. Abramson ran a successful Kickstarter campaign based on this premise and brought his idea into production—in addition to inspiring real people to try the physically and emotionally beneficial practice.
Abramson has since expanded his premise by adding more positions. He calls them Advanced Yoga Joes, and they demonstrate “next level yoga poses” like the Advanced Side Plank, Scorpion, and Lotus Headstand. “We made impossible balance happen,” Abramson tells us in an email.
Humans aren’t the only ones drawn to the famous “Energy Vortexes” of Sedona, Arizona—a place where swirling centers of subtle energy emerge from the Earth’s surface. Abramson wanted to see how this locale would affect the Yoga Joes, so he and a friend spent a full week hiking at sunrise and sunset to photograph the plastic men against the stunning red rock backdrop. “We wanted to capture some of the perfect light that only exists for 5 minutes a day,” Abramson explains. The results are beautiful landscape images whose breathtaking scenery complements the Yoga Joes‘ elegant poses and vibrant green skin.
Advanced Yoga Joes are now available for pre-order through their online shop.
