Tom Lane and Ged Palmer created a magnificent hand-lettered gorilla and sprayed it with heat-sensitive paint. During the day, as the sun's heat warmed up the sculpture, the gorilla turned white and informative text was revealed. As it cooled down at night, the sculpture returned back to black and the text vanished.
The sculpture was part of the wildly popular Wow! Gorillas project, which involved sixty leading artists and was timed to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Bristol Zoo in the UK. Running for ten weeks over the summer, the initiative drew attention to the plight of gorillas in the wild.
Lane and Palmer, who donated their creativity for the cause at the last minute, were awarded a silver and a bronze in the Fresh Digital Awards for the gorilla, and also raised 5,000 for it at a charity auction.
