Photographer Captures the Summertime Magic of Fireflies Swarming Japanโs Lush Forests [Interview]
Every summer, Japanโs forests bear witness to magic. Thousands of fireflies, or himebotaru, drift through the night sky, emitting a soft glow not unlike that of a candle or a star. Against the thick leaves, these insects almost resemble fairies, a comparison that has not gone unnoticed by photographer Kazuaki Koseki. For the past eight years, Koseki has pursued himebotaru throughout Japanโs Yamagata prefecture, a region in which theyโre an endemic species.
