Vegetable Silverware Designs That Look Real Enough to Eat

Boring, white plastic silverware is old news to artist Qiyun Deng. Recently, the innovative product designer developed a collection of environmentally-friendly, but still disposable, silverware and serving bowl concepts that look just like everyday plants and vegetables. The series, entitled Graft, features objects constructed out of bioplastic PLA, a material pulled from renewable sources like vegetable fats and oils.

Graft was produced as part of Deng's diploma project at the cole cantonale d'art de Lausanne in Switzerland and it is strongly inspired by nature. The artist crafted forks, spoons, and knives that blend nature together with manmade objects that we use everyday. Although the shapes mimic vegetables, they are designed to properly function as utensils. The handle of the fork looks just like a stalk of celery and the handle of the spoon looks just like a carrot. Deng asks, “By waking both visual and haptic sensation it brings along a question: Will you throw them away easily?”
