Incredibly Expressive Installation Merges Multiple Art Forms

Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based artist Sougwen Chung blends various mediums together to create expressive installations. By merging the traditional art form of drawing with more modern software, sound, and light manipulations, Chung produced Chiaroscuro, which is a fascinating example of the talented artist's elaborate vision. The installation is composed of monochromatic, abstract drawings, coils and projected light, and ethereal music, all merging to form a captivating space.

During the exhibit, ornamental light morphs around the room, moving, changing, and illuminating various aspects of Chung's suspended illustrations. Additionally, fragmented portions appear and disappear and outlines emerge and slowly fade into the darkness as the mesmerizing music creates a peaceful atmosphere. The absolutely stunning performance provides an experience in which simple and complex art forms are blended together to produce something new. Chung's bio explains that her “immersive work plays with contrasts and transitions, when those liminal experiences where our human-ness is thrown into high relief by our use of and ever-deepening relationship with technology.”
