Artist Tim Jeffs brings vivid illustrations of regal reptiles to life with bold, black lines and brilliant pencil-crayon shading. The New York City-based artist starts a picture by drawing an outline that looks like a grid, which he then fills in with a beautiful spectrum of colored pencils. The grid “squares” transform into rainbow-colored scales, which function like individually shaded pixels to make up a brilliant, Technicolor image.
Astonishingly, art isn't Jeffs' main business – rather, it's his hobby and passion. Although he does sell some of his work through an Etsy store, the New Jersey father of two works in publishing during the day and creates his drawings by night. When beginning a new piece, he says he looks for “dramatic and dynamic subjects and compositions.” “I love detail,” he says on his website. “The more complex and intricate the subject matter, the better.”
