“Nothing prepares you for this once-in-a-lifetime moment.” What kind of look would you find on a man's face just minutes after his child's birth? Extreme happiness, unbelievable terror, excitement and wonder? Photographer Dave Young captured these expressions and more in a captivating new series. Taken just minutes after their partner gave birth, these photos show a range of extreme emotions. Though they vary, each expression is 100% real. On the nights of April 23rd to April 26th, Young walked through the halls of London's Chelsea and Westminster hospital and came face to face with these fathers. Not only did he snap their photos, he asked them to share a sweet message they'd want to send out to their new babies.
The photo series was created to launch a special Father's Day book by The Book of Everyone, a website where you can make your own personalized books. Steve Hanson, co-founder of The Book of Everyone says, “the idea came about when we wanted to do something special to celebrate Father's Day. The Book of Everyone is a new start up run by 3 dads, one of whom has just had a baby and still has the look of wonder – or is it terror? – on his face. We thought it'd be fun to celebrate that awe, worry and relief on the faces of new Dads who have just witnessed the birth of their sons or daughters in hospitals around London. Dave Young was the perfect photographer to capture these once in a lifetime moments.”
