Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Architects Design Home with Flower Pots Built into the Exterior Walls

While designing a dwelling in Seoul, Korea, OA: Lab took note of how common it was for people to decorate the exterior of their home with flowers. Despite homeowners' desire for botanical design incorporation, structures simply hadn't been built with planters embedded into them. OA: Lab decided to run with this idea and take an unconventional approach–they ingeniously integrated nature into the structure's facade.

Woman's Clever Tattoo is a Friendly Reminder She's Deaf in One Ear

For some folks, tattoos are purely decorative, but for others, they're a helpful way to tell the world who they are. Imgur user raingoose recently got a tattoo for this exact purpose, because she's deaf in one ear. To let others know, she had a simple-yet-clever design placed behind her non-hearing ear–it's a tiny speaker with an “x” next to it.

The term “hipster” can be applied to more than just humans in skinny jeans. Animals can also embody the subculture, and few do it better than the adorable pup known as Toby LittleDude. This aww-worthy Maltese, who goes by the name Tobes, dons the iconic fashions of a hipster, sporting perfectly-sized versions of thick-rimmed glasses, colorful bow ties, grandpa-style cardigans, and a lot of hats. With his snazzy wardrobe, chances are he could out-hipster most humans.
