Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Illustrations Reveal “Sad Facts” About Animals with Charming Wit

Did you know that houseflies can only hum in the key of F? Or that blobfish have no muscles? These are just a couple of illustrator Brooke Barker's Sad Animal Facts. It's an ongoing series that highlights some of the surprising things we probably didn't know about pigs, giraffes, hippos, goats, and much more. The strange-yet-fascinating facts are always accompanied by Barker's charming drawings and witty commentary from the animal subject.

Exquisite Sculptural Blooms Made with Thousands of Ceramic Shards

Using thousands of ceramic shards, Israeli artist Zemer Peled constructs sculptures that resemble beautiful blooming flowers. The intricate works combine a variety of colors and designs, most notably cobalt blue that's used in traditional Japanese pottery. Peled arranges the shards according to their length, color, and shape. The similar-looking pieces form long petals with a dotted, stamen-like center.

Funny Cat Bed Mimics "Chain Chomp" from Super Mario Bros.

The team at Catastrophic Creations recently completed an unconventional cat bed that'll appeal to fans of the Super Mario Bros. universe. They were inspired by the game's adorable enemy called Chain Chomp and constructed a feline-friendly bunk in its likeness. To use it, the cat simply climbs over the terrifying teeth and into a soft and cushy space. This provides the feline protection while still allowing them to survey the room.

Bundt Cake Tutorial Reveals a Surprise Bigfoot Figure When Sliced Open

As Bigfoot believers might tell you, you'll never know when the elusive cryptid will show up. It could even be in something like a baked good! Food writer Jenn Fujikawa created a Bigfoot Bundt Cake tutorial that features Sasquatch hidden beneath the surface. At first glance, it looks like your average sweet treat, but once it's sliced open, the cake reveals an awesome surprise.
