One of These Five Black Artists’ Designs Will Be Chosen for the Harriet Tubman Memorial in Philadelphia

In 2022, Philadelphia announced plans for a memorial dedicated to abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who helped rescue dozens of escaped people after escaping slavery herself. The original proposal included a statue by Wesley Wofford, a white male artist, prompting residents' criticism. Fortunately, the City of Philadelphia's Office of Arts Culture, and the Creative Economy (OACCE) listened to people's feedback and collected five new potential designs, all by Black artists.

Abandoned Materials Are Upcycled Into Charming Bug Sculptures

Abandoned materials find new life in Mark Oliver‘s charming sculptures. The UK-based artist upcycles everything from scrap metal to playing cards, carefully assembling different parts together until he creates amazing figurines that resemble fantastical insects. This ongoing series, titled Litter Bugs, features collage sculptures of various shapes and sizes. Oliver credits his father's collection of electrical and engineering components for inspiring his interest in layering different elements together.

Retired Baseball Player is Now a Full-Time Artist Specializing in Wood and Resin Sculptures

Lustrous and hard-wearing, epoxy resin has risen in popularity among contemporary artists. Its versatility comes from being able to be combined with other ingredients such as pigment powders or even other objects like flowers and sand. In the case of Blake McFarland‘s work, he prefers to pair resin with different wood varieties. Since retiring from baseball, he works full-time as an artist, creating stunning sculptures of animals like wolves, bears, and beyond.
