Public Art Installation Honors George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and John Lewis in NYC’s Union Square

On October 1, three new statues went up in New York City’s Union Square. The three busts, each crafted from 200 layers of thinly-sliced African Mahogany wood and coated in shimmering bronze, bear the likenesses of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and John Lewis. Part of a public art installation called SEEINJUSTICE, the 10-foot-tall statues were crafted by artist Chris Carnabuci in collaboration with Confront Art and its charity partner We Are Floyd Inc.

Emancipation and Freedom Monument Unveiled as Official Replacement of Robert E. Lee Statue

A project nearly 10 years in the making came to fruition this week on a rainy morning in Richmond, Virginia. On September 22, the long-anticipated Emancipation and Freedom Monument was unveiled and dedicated on Brown’s Island to a crowd of rain-soaked but dedicated onlookers. The arrangements were begun back in 2013 by the Virginia Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Christopher Columbus Statue in Mexico City Will Be Replaced by a Monument To Indigenous Women

Mexico joins the long list of countries gripped in a post-colonial reckoning with problematic historical figures as its capital city puts plans in motion to replace a long-standing monument to Christopher Columbus. Previously located on one of Mexico City’s main thoroughfares, Paseo de la Reforma, the 19th-century bronze statue of the controversial explorer was removed by city officials last October for scheduled restoration.

New UK Laws Will Recognize Animals as Sentient Beings

It's obvious to many pet owners that their pets experience emotion and show affection. However, animals are rarely recognized in law as sentient beings—conscious creatures who are aware of feelings and sensations. In the United Kingdom, 50 animal welfare charities have successfully lobbied and collaborated with the government to fix this oversight. A new policy paper by the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has been released.
