Artist Gives New Life to Old Forgotten Photographs With Colorful Hand Embroidery

More and more, contemporary embroiderers are pushing the boundaries of the age-old craft to produce unique hand-stitched pieces. Such is the case for calligrapher and fiber artist Han Cao, who combines her chromatic embroidery with found vintage photographs in her series Forgotten Photos. Although based in Palm Springs, Cao collects black and white and sepia-toned pictures from estate sales, antique stores, and flea markets from around the world.

Photographer Recreates 19th Century Paintings With South Indian Actors

Photographer G. Venket Ram has translated famous paintings from the 19th century into exquisite photographs that grace a 2020 calendar. Using the renowned Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma as his inspiration, Ram and his team were meticulous in recreating the fine details of the Varma originals with South Indian actors. In some instances, Ram fused painting and photography by adding backdrops that appear to be enlarged versions of the source material.

Interview: Venezuelan Refugees Surrounded by Their Belongings

Since 2014, faced with an increasingly dim economic and political situation, Venezuelans have been leaving their country in droves. In fact, the UNHCR estimates that there's been an 8000% increase in Venezuelans seeking refugee status in the past 5 years, which has led to 4 million people now living abroad. It's in this context that photographer Gregg Segal raised his lens to capture some of the faces that have been affected by these changes.
