Artist Clive Maddison creates eye-catching sculptures of magnificently elaborate trees, but uses only wire to do so. Strand by strand, the sculptor manipulates single pieces of wire to create sturdy branches, leaves, and dense roots that culminate in a self-supported, yet intricate, wire tree. Throughout this entire process, Maddison does not utilize glue or any other adhesive to hold the pieces together.
While one would expect the wire to add a modernistic element to the sculptures, the artist's technique is actually quite subtle. The wire is weaved together as it flows from the wooden base to the top of the tree. By intertwining the wire in this fashion, the harsh lines of this material are eliminated, so that only the smooth curves of the tree stand out.
Since the individual pieces are made entirely by hand, this means that each sculpture is guaranteed to be a one-of-a-kind design. In fact, each work of art is inspired by an actual tree and, as a whole, the trees are meant to pay homage to the diversity of the natural world that we live in.
