Los Angeles-based art director Yaoyao Ma Van As is an animal lover who enjoys illustrating one of the most important elements of her life—her dog Parker. Her collection of endearing images details the joys of being a dog owner and the special bond that occurs between humans and their canine friends.
Ma Van As decided to get back into drawing a few years ago as a separate creative hobby away from her day job as an art director for an animated TV show. Working in Photoshop, she's able to render heartfelt moments that all dog lovers can relate to with a warmth and charm that makes it difficult to believe these illustrations are digital. From snuggling up together under the covers to the sensation of little paws as they beg to be let outside, she captures scenarios common to most dog owners.
Drawing on her experiences with Parker came naturally to Ma Van As, who has always had animals in her life. “Parker is my son, and I love him so, so much,” she tells My Modern Met. “I think anyone who loves their dog as much as I do, understands how strong the bond is. Parker and I are really on the same wavelength. He likes to jump on me when I'm happy and consoles me when I'm upset. He really is my emotional support.”
While Ma Van As features more than just Parker in her drawings, it's her series of illustrations celebrating their bond that really packs an emotional punch. Their incredible connection and love for adventure shines through and is so relatable for anyone who considers their dog their best friend.
