Photographer Creates Jigsaw Puzzles to Reveal Subtle Differences Between Identical Twins

London-based fine art photographer Alma Haser is known for turning traditional portrait photography into eye-catching, futuristic imagery. Using various manipulation techniques, such as three-dimensional paper folding and carefully constructed collage, the resulting surreal portraits blur the line between reality and fantasy. For her latest project titled Within 15 Minutes, Haser explores her fascination with identical twins by creating jigsaw puzzles portraits that reveal the subtle differences between them.

Inspired by monozygotic twins—siblings that develop from one zygote, which splits and forms two embryos—Haser’s subjects were five different sets of identical siblings. After photographing each person individually, Haser then turned the portraits into jigsaw puzzles. However, instead of placing the correct pieces together, the artist swapped every other piece, mixing each person’s portrait up with his/her sibling’s portrait. By not knowing where their facial features would be placed when mixed and arranged side by side, the hybrid portraits appear distorted, unrecognizable, and strangely eerie. Haser explains that the twins are “no longer seen as completely identical, they are unique.”
