Yet, there's a little known fact about this island: it produces 680 cubic meters of garbage a day–this translates to a 14-story building full of waste! Fewer than 5 percent of plastic bags get recycled and almost all end up being littered, burnt, or discarded into drain systems that eventually leach into the ocean.

His unsettling microcosms call to mind words such as ooze, growth, and spread. These associations are deliberate as Cray draws inspiration for his pieces from concepts such as sound waves, fungus cultures, and microbial diseases. Garish colours invite interactions between his work and audience, where one may intrinsically withdraw for fear of infection.

Eco-Friendly Family Is Living Inside a Giant Greenhouse for the Next Three Years

The Scholten family is raising the bar for plant lovers everywhere. In collaboration with students from Rotterdam University, the family of four (plus one dog) just moved into a giant greenhouse that doubles as a home. After applying for a spot in this experimental structure, the Scholten's were soon accepted by the program and, in 2015, they moved into their new home.

Artist Swirls a Swarm of 10,000 Ceramic Insects Across Gallery Walls

Several years ago, Anna Collette Hunt “stirred the swarm,” summoning 10,000 insects into the towers of Wollaton Hall, which is home to the Natural History Collection in Nottingham, England. These weren't real bugs, but were handmade ceramics created by Hunt. The impressive collection of gold and jewel-toned creatures swirled across the walls and down the stairs of the Hall. Each insect was unique and had subtle variations–some were missing wings or limbs.
