Captivating Melting Sculpture

Customarily, when an artist constructs a life-sized statue of someone, the intention is to keep the form as solid as possible, to mimic the human physique. However, internationally revered contemporary artist Diana Al-Hadid's piece called “In Mortal Repose” challenges those conventions. The figure is melting on the pedestal she would otherwise be standing atop. Al-Hadid's work, though usually architectural, has a common theme that revolves around the fragility of man and his creations.

Beautifully Bent Cherry Tree Project

What a surreal idea! “The Patient Gardener” is the product of a weeklong workshop conducted by Visiondivision. Ten Japanese cherry trees have been planted in a 26 foot diameter ring (8 meters), and will slowly grow into their bent design. The saplings are being pulled toward a tower in the center that will be removed once the trees are strong enough and won't unbend.

New Banksy Monopoly Sculpture for Occupy London

Though we hadn't heard from elusive street artist Banksy in a little while, it should come as no surprise that his latest piece would be for the “Occupy” movement. Popping up at St. Paul's Cathedral for Occupy London, this brand new sculpture features a panhandling Rich “Uncle” Pennybags on a make-believe Monopoly board. According to Demotix, it was created “as a show of support for their protest against corporate greed and corruption.

Most Expressive Pumpkin Faces Ever!

Just when we thought our pumpkin carvings were creative, we ran across these! We've seen Ray Villafane's expert hand at sand sculpting, but his original expertise lies in pumpkin carving. With Halloween creeping up on us, the New York native's pumpkin sculptures are in season. Each wrinkly, orange globe that Villafane digs into is brought to life with an animated expression. It's hard to believe that these figures were ever pumpkins!
