This Artistic Teen Hand-Painted Her Own Stunning Graduation Dress

Manila-based student Ciara Gan faced a problem that many of us have had before. She couldn’t find the perfect dress to wear to a special occasion—in this case, her graduation. But instead of settling on something she didn't love, Gan decided to take matters into her own hands—literally—and teamed up with her mom to create a custom DIY dress. The result is a gorgeous emerald green garment that features voluminous pleats and a sweetheart neckline.

Brilliant Embroidery Uses Thread to Mimic Luscious Hair Flowing Off the Hoop

From thread painting to “floating” textile motifs, the boundaries of embroidery are being pushed and blurred more and more by contemporary textile artists. Bernita Broderie is helping to enhance this wave of contemporary embroidery art with her brilliant use of cotton threads. She uses the common fibers to render three-dimensional hairstyles that cascade from embroidery hoops in wonderfully unexpected ways. The French crafter’s hand-stitched designs are made using various hair-colored yarns stitched into raw cotton fabric.

Eco-Friendly Asian Supermarket Replaces Plastic Packaging with Banana Leaves

More and more countries around the world are waking up to the harmful effects of plastic pollution on our environment. In the U.S., California recently became the first state to officially ban plastic bags, and the European Union voted to say goodbye to single use plastic by 2021. Asia is also doing its part to save the planet, having recently introduced a natural alternative to plastic packaging—banana leaves.
