Alex Assali is a Syrian refugee who believes in the beauty of paying it forward. After criticizing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad online in 2007, Assali fled Damascus without a passport. For several years, he lived in Libya and worked to help Syrian refugees. In 2014, he made his way to Germany. “He really has lost everything; he had to leave his family back in Syria because people wanted to kill him,” writes his friend Tabea Bü. Although he doesn't have much, Assali still wants to give something back to repay the people of Germany for their kindness. To do so, he began setting up meal stations around Berlin so he could distribute food to the homeless.
When Assali was serving people at Alexanderplatz station, Bü captured a photo of him and posted it online. Since then, this image has gained a considerable amount of attention as many are inspired by the Syrian refugee's charitable humanity.
