Magnificent Five-Story Book Mountain Library

Architecture firm MVRDV designed this magnificent library called Book Mountain, literally a mountain of books covered by a glass shell. The public library, located in Spijkenisse near Rotterdam, sits in the market square and serves as an invitation for visitors to come in and take a gander at the giant selection of interesting books shelved within the five-story structure.

The building is formed out of brick, glass, and wood, and is shaped like a pyramid. Many of the design elements refer back to the city’s agricultural history. The building’s facade reflects the shape of a traditional Dutch farm, covered by a glass ceiling with wooden trussets, while many of the library shelves are constructed from recycled flowerpots that are both fireproof and economically practical.

In addition to the reading adventures that people experience at the library, this modern design adds a new, physical element into the mix. Spiral staircases, pathways, and terraces form a more than 1,500 foot-long route throughout the multiple levels of literature. At the very top, readers can sit, relax, and appreciate a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Dutch town.
