While most of us discard old and broken items, Russian artist Igor Verniy turns metal scraps into stunning steampunk-infused animal sculptures. Spanning a myriad of species from birds and mammals to reptiles and insects, Verniy's impressive models are hand-assembled from old car parts, watches, electronics, and more.
“My love of natural science and engineering, plus my passion for robots and science fiction, requires me to create something unique and alive,” Verniy tells My Modern Met. “This is biology and robotics. Longing for the future.” To combine these two seemingly disparate fields, Verniy studies the body proportions, behavior, and movements of his animal subjects in their natural habitat. Many of the artist’s sculptures feature moveable parts such as legs, heads, and wings that allow them to be positioned into lifelike poses.
Some of Verniy’s cyberpunk creatures are inspired by cultural symbolism. A dove, for instance, is the universal emblem of peace while a fish is modeled after Alexander Pushkin's drawings and description in his poem, The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish. But no matter his inspiration, each finished piece showcases the artist’s incredible talent and passion for his craft.
