A new show starting today, May 29, and running till August 15, brings to light a growing trend, mixing photographs with embroidery. The Embroidered Image at Robert Mann Gallery in New York brings together the work of multiple artists, like Matthew Cox, Diane Meyer, Jessica Wohl, and Melissa Zexter, to show how the needle and thread can transform photographs into a whole new art form.
In the case of Melissa Zexter, a Brooklyn-based artist who holds a BFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Photography from New York University/International Center of Photography, the base photograph is just as important as the hand-stitched embroidery. Using both traditional black and white techniques and digital processes, she takes each one of her photos and then carefully stitches patterns of thread on top of them till they take on whole new dimensions. Here is a small sample of some of her work. Mesmerizing.
