How do you go about creating the table of excellence? For designer Alexandre Chapelin of LA Table, a truly masterful table should be unique, artistic, and visually appealing. He says, “[It] must have a story, a soul, and something to tell. It has to be contemporary and surprising.” The soul and the story of this coffee table begins with a base of natural stone, carved to replicate Earth's plateaus and cliffsides as they plunge deep under sea level. They're designed as models of the island of St. Martin in the French West Indies.
Chapelin tells us in an email: “I take a natural block of natural stone and I include resin, to created a compact block for you to have the impression of having the ocean in your living room.” His technique and the aesthetic appeal behind his latest design is a continuation of his Lagoon series, which celebrates the beauty of our planet's vast bodies of water. The combination of stone and resin adds a recognizable pairing of elements in the natural world, and Chapelin aptly tells us “The used natural stone…marries perfectly with the resin that represents the ocean.”
This distinctive piece of furniture is a study in oceanography, as well as a unique piece of decor to individualize any room it sits in. Count the layers of rock and water within, and feel yourself get lost in its tranquility. Listen! The ocean has a story to tell.
