France-based graphic designer Outmane Amahou created this clever series as a way to visually document the history of art in a unique set of minimalist posters. The series, entitled Minimalist Art Movement Posters, features single shapes and solid blocks of color to portray the Renaissance, Expressionism, Surrealism, Dadaism, and Abstract art, to name a few. Each object is an iconic representation of a famous artist from that time period. We see a fragmented face by Pablo PIcasso, Ren Magritte's cigar pipe, and Andy Warhol's famous soup can.
Amahou also incorporates the colors of each movement, using blues for Impressionism, bold red for Pop Art, and simple black and white for Minimalism. When asked about the project, the artist said, “The series was born from my observation. When I imagine an art movement, in my mind I see a minimalist form taken from a famous work. For example, when I think of Surrealism, the first image that comes to my mind is a melting clock.” As viewers, we can quickly associate certain artists with certain time periods, and then we can learn a little about the artists we don't immediately recognize. Cool art and a history lesson, all in one impressive project.
