This summer, London's Kensington Gardens will be overtaken with a mesmerizing structure that looks like it came from the pages of a whimsical children's storybook. The 15th rendition of the Serpentine Pavilion, sponsored by Serpentine Galleries, was created this year by the Spanish artist-architect duo SelgasCano. Jose Selgas and Lucia Cano's renderings of the design show that they chose to compose their asymmetrical, polygon-shaped structure out of colorful fabric that is interwoven with webbed material. The result is a fairytale-like place that fills both children and adults with a dazzling sense of wonder.
When visitors step inside the structure, they will feel as if they've walked into a kaleidoscope. Brilliant colors shimmer at every turn as the fabric reflects sunlight and casts a stained-glass glow throughout. Guests can wander through the rainbow tunnels in search of the “secret corridor” that passes between the inner and outer layers of fabric.
But the pavilion will be much more than a maze. It will also function as an ambiance-filled public space for socializing and hosting live events. The gallery's directors described it as “an extraordinary chrysalis-like structure, as organic as the surrounding gardens.” It will become “a place for people to meet, to have coffee and to experience the live events we put on throughout the summer.”
