With his camera in tow, Shamim Shorif Susom has access to breathtaking and dramatic bird's-eye views of Bangladesh during his flights. He began snapping shots of his homeland as a way of expressing his gratefulness to be able to travel, and his desire to proudly share images of his beautiful home country, particularly from his unique, aerial perspective.
Susom’s origins as a photographer came about from growing up in a village in Bangladesh, and then moving to the busy and bustling capital of Dhaka. From there, he frequently moved from city to city and the constant changes in environment compelled him to connect with remnants of his past and his childhood. From a young age, he had strong interests in photography and indicates, “The way I see it, I am fortunate enough to fly, and fortunate enough to see my root, my village, my urban life from a different perspective… at the end of the day, I’m capturing the memoirs of my reconnection. I am revisiting my country, my past, my childhood.”
His enthusiasm and passion is evident in his philosophy both towards photography and life. “Its all out there, just waiting to be found, waiting to be experience, waiting to be captured. Explore, engage, touch, reflect… I find photography is like a voyage through the ocean of emotions and beauty of the world. I consider my camera as my friend, who helps me see the world in a manner I never did before, and feel it in my soul… I cannot capture a lot of things I wanted to, but the excitement is not in the execution, it’s in the effort. And I feel blessed be to the one trying, I feel lucky, everyday.”
Along with Bangladesh’s flowing rivers and lush countryside, he also photographs people and nature from his travels through Europe, West Africa, and South Asia. The range of his works can be viewed on his Flickr page and his website, Blackbird's Eye.
