Human-Shaped “Pool” Lies in a Field, Reflecting the Ever-Changing Sky

Nature's Reflection Icy and Sot Reflecting Pool Earth Art Installation

For their latest project, Nature's Reflection, Brooklyn-based brothers and stencil artists Icy and Sot have traded in their typical street art setting for a more pastoral landscape. Featuring a human-shaped mirror installed onto a plot of grassy land, the cleverly-titled piece of earth art offers beautiful, bodily reflections of the ever-changing sky.

Set in rural Tbilisi, Georgia, Nature's Reflection features an unidentified, silhouetted figure lying in the grass. Though undeniably thought-provoking, the installation itself is simply rendered. To create the piece, the artists placed a human-shaped mirror in the dirt. Like a body of water, Nature's Reflection reflects the light, clouds, and colors of the sky, though its unique shape strikingly sets it apart from natural formations. Reminiscent of a reflecting pool, its quiet atmosphere allows for uninterrupted contemplation.

While, on the surface, the reflecting pool-inspired piece may not have much in common with the Iranian artists' stenciled spray paintings, the piece perfectly conveys their ephemeral and conceptual approach to art. Given the arbitrary nature of the piece and the brothers' interest in exploring “a world freed from borders, war and violence,” its subject matter is widely open to interpretation. To some, it may merely portray a person reclining in the greenery; to others, it may evoke a grassy grave. Either way, one thing is clear: Nature's Reflection, like all of Icy and Sot's workwill make you think.

Stencil artists Icy and Sot have created Nature's Reflection, an earth art installation featuring a human-shaped mirror reminiscent of a reflecting pool.

The artists explored a similar concept and aesthetic with Human Reflection on Nature, a contemporaneous piece made of plastic trash found in a river.
