Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Thrift Store Discovers Photo Album of Mystery Woman Posing With Every A-List Hollywood Celebrity

The thrift store Opnieuw & Co in Mortsel, Belgium recently made a discovery that’s like opening a Hollywood time capsule. While sorting through a box of donated clothing and other items, workers there found an old photo album featuring the same woman posing next to A-list celebrities. Many of the images, that included the likes of Robert Downey, Jr.

Artist Explores New York City Through Energetic Sketches of Its Buildings and People

Brooklyn-based artist Gavin Snider captures the energy of New York City through urban sketching. Venturing to the likes of Grand Central Terminal, Greenwich Village, and Chinatown, he highlights one of the best reasons to live in Manhattan (and the surrounding boroughs)—there are so many different things to see and do. From contemporary structures to historical homes, his pen and ink drawings reflect what makes the city such an exciting place to live and work.

Photographer Recreates 19th Century Paintings With South Indian Actors

Photographer G. Venket Ram has translated famous paintings from the 19th century into exquisite photographs that grace a 2020 calendar. Using the renowned Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma as his inspiration, Ram and his team were meticulous in recreating the fine details of the Varma originals with South Indian actors. In some instances, Ram fused painting and photography by adding backdrops that appear to be enlarged versions of the source material.

Land Artist Surprises Beach Goers By Leaving Striking Stone Arrangements Along the Coast

Land artist Jon Foreman finds comfort in arranging stones in eye-pleasing formations on the beach. His practice, which he calls Sculpt the World, showcases rocks fashioned into swirling patterns as well as giant circles containing an array of rainbow-esque hues. “This process is therapy to me,” Foreman tells My Modern Met. “The simple act of placing stone upon stone in the sand is very therapeutic.
