Throughout the years, we've seen people with unique pets, such as axolotls and spiders. But have you ever met a pet water buffalo? A girl named Chen Dongmei, from Sichuan, China, is the proud human of one of these fluffy creatures. From roaming the woods together to posing for selfies, Chen shares her adorable adventures alongside her water buffalo on Instagram. Chen's water buffalo is named Niuzai (牛仔), which means “cowboy” in Chinese.

Photographer Wins Prize for Heartbreaking Story About the Plight of Endangered Forest Elephants

Dutch photographer Jasper Doest has dedicated his career to “giving a voice to nonhuman lives.” His award-winning photography tells visual stories of wildlife in desperate need of attention. Now his work is being honored within the context of the GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Doest's moving photostory about endangered African forest elephants in central Gabon has earned him the 2023 Fritz Pölking Prize.

Small Californian Town Elects Dog as Its Mayor for Third Time in a Row

There’s a small town in Southern California that hasn't had a human mayor in over 10 years. Instead, the non-incorporated town boasts three generations of sweet-tempered dog politicians. Its most recent elected official, Mayor Max III, is a handsome golden retriever who assists his citizens by joining community events and mixers, and by generally being adorable. This tradition of four-legged mayors began in 2012 with Max I, a 12-year-old golden.

Winners of 2023 International Pet Photography Awards Capture the Souls of Our Furry Friends

Pet photographers from 32 different countries entered their best images of dogs, cats, horses, and more to the 2023 International Pet Photographer of the Year contest. Hosted by dog photography platform Unleashed Education, the winners were revealed during Shutterhound, the world's first specialist dog photography conference. Swedish photographer Sanna Sander took home the title of International Pet Photographer of the Year for her strong portfolio of images.
