24 Designers Reimagine How Walls Can Shape Public Space at the 2025 Seoul Biennale

In an effort to shake up how architects use the exteriors of their buildings, 24 designers from around the globe will create an enormous Walls of Public Life at the 2025 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. Envisioned to demonstrate “how good the outsides of buildings can be,” Walls of Public Life is the brainchild of celebrated architect Thomas Heatherwick in his role as general director of the Seoul Biennale.

Bamboo Cabin Shaped Like a Rice Dumpling Celebrates Taiwan’s Culinary Heritage

In Taiwan, zongzi are the height of comfort food. They’re petite, gelatinous rice dumplings meticulously wrapped in bamboo leaves, packed with everything from sweet pastes to savory pork. But beyond that, they also happen to be the inspiration behind Cheng Tsung Feng’s newest project, hidden beside a bamboo forest hiking trail in Nantou, Taiwan. Designed for this year’s Nantou Bamboo Dream Festival, Feng’s Bamboo Cabin Plan: Sticky Rice Dumpling is an exercise in gestural architecture.

Sculptural Tree Is a Vertical Park With 56 Elevated “Petal” Terraces

In Xi’an, China, the city’s Center Culture Business District (CCBD) has finally emerged. The district, whose design was spearheaded by the London-based firm Heatherwick Studio, is nestled just south of the city’s historic center, lodged between the ruins of the Temple of Heaven and the prominent Shaanxi TV tower. This rich heritage informs, but doesn’t stifle Xi’an CCBD, which brilliantly combines ancient influences with contemporary forms and functions.

Short Doc Takes Us Inside a 1,300-Year-Old Hotel Run by Same Family for 46 Generations in Japan

Japan is a culturally rich nation filled with history that endures today. One prime example of this is Hōshi, a 1,300-year-old ryokan (a Japanese traditional inn) in the city of Komatsu. Founded in 717, it holds the record for the world’s oldest, continually run family business, as well as third oldest hotel in Japan. Since its opening, 46 generations of Hōshi family members have overseen the hotel operations.
