Black Artists Revitalize the Streets of Detroit With a Colorful Mural Festival

The City of Detroit’s North End just got a whole lot more colorful. And that’s all thanks to BLKOUT Walls—a mural festival led by Black artists—which launched its inaugural event back in July. Taking place over the course of a week, the festival brought a diverse group of local and visiting artists to work their magic on Detroit’s city streets.

Paris’ Iconic Arc de Triomphe Gets Wrapped in Shimmering Fabric

Late artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude had a life-long dream of wrapping the Arc de Triomphe in fabric, with the hope that visitors would be able to freely experience their work—in this case by feeling the fabric that covers the monument. Now, their dreams have posthumously come true. Introducing L’Arc de Triomphe Wrapped—an installation that temporarily wraps the iconic Arc de Triomphe monument with massive sheets of shimmering fabric tied together with red rope.

Memorial Uses an Empty Silhouette To Honor Soldiers Who Fought in WWI and WWII

War leaves scars in families which never truly fade away. A memorial in the Hungarian village of Vácrátót pays homage to soldiers who fought and died in WWI and WWII with a moving statue. It depicts a family of four in traditional Hungarian folk clothing, only the father figure is missing from the portrait. Instead, there is a cutout silhouette of where the soldier is supposed to be—alive, in the company of his family.

Colossal Creatures Made From Rice Straw Invade a Park in Japan

Every year, a coastal region of Japan shows that you can make more with straw than just haybales. The Wara Art Festival in Niigita prefecture features colossal sculptures that are made from leftover rice-straw, known as “wara.” While the festival took a hiatus in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it has returned in time for its 13th anniversary and features a whole new collection of handmade creatures at Uwasekigata Park.
