Intricate Fiber Art Sculptures Explore the Inherent Optimism in the Cycle of Life

Artist Janis Ledwell-Hunt of Unfettered Co. crafts fiber sculptures that show the interconnectedness of our world. Calling herself a “creator of knotted things,” she uses macramé, crochet, and other textile art techniques to form pieces that unite seemingly disparate subjects. A set of human lungs comprise various mushrooms and a bird's chest cavity opens to reveal coral and more mushrooms.

Giant Origami Animal Sculptures Transform NYC’s Garment District Into a Colorful Zoo

With its intricate designs folded from delicate squares of paper, origami is traditionally thought of as a very fragile art form. However, for California artist Hacer, the traditional art of paper folding is much more than that. The sculptor was originally introduced to origami when he was just 7 years old, through the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr.

Christopher Columbus Statue in Mexico City Will Be Replaced by a Monument To Indigenous Women

Mexico joins the long list of countries gripped in a post-colonial reckoning with problematic historical figures as its capital city puts plans in motion to replace a long-standing monument to Christopher Columbus. Previously located on one of Mexico City’s main thoroughfares, Paseo de la Reforma, the 19th-century bronze statue of the controversial explorer was removed by city officials last October for scheduled restoration.
