Man Shaves off Half His Beard and Creatively Fills It in with Amusing Objects

So Paolo-based photographer and art director Adriano Alarcon can grow quite a beard, and he spent four months cultivating his facial hair before shaving exactly half of it off. It's an unconventional move to say the least, but one that was well worth it. His photo project called Fifty Fifty Selfie Barber Shop is an amusing look at how he fills in the other half of his beard.

Remarkable 240-Year-Old Doll Automaton Can Write Actual Programmable Text

Designed and constructed in the 1770s, this extraordinary little doll is actually a self-operating machine that's believed by some to be one of the oldest examples of a computer. Known as “The Writer,” the automaton was built by Swiss-born watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz in order to entertain nobility and promote watches. In addition to “The Writer,” the ingenious craftsman created two other incredible doll automata with the help of his son Henri-Louis and Jean-Frdric Leschot.

Large-Scale Pavilion Made of Books Offers Free Reading Material to All

This airy pavilion celebrates the power of the printed word by using books as its building blocks. Set to debut at Berkeley's first Bay Area Book Festival in June, Lacuna is both a large-scale public art installation and a “library” of free books that visitors can take home and keep. Renderings of the unique structure show it's comprised of 12 pillars made of stacked books.

Clever Ads Reveal an Unexpected Side to Famous Artworks

This amusing series of ads reveal an unexpected side to famous artworks – one that's totally different when you're wearing glasses. Advertising agency Y&R: Paris created them for the France-based eyewear retailer Keloptic, and they demonstrate how the right pair of spectacles can put a blurred image into focus. The campaign features Impressionist paintings by Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Georges Seurat.
